It was 25 years ago today, June 2, 1998, that at least 14 tornadoes ripped through Western Pennsylvania, leaving severe damage across the Pittsburgh area.
Mount Washington was among the hardest hit areas.
KDKA-TV producer Corey Martin took a look back on the event on the Big K Morning Show
“It was a very rare instance and . . . It’s something you don’t think of, a tornado hitting Mount Washington right here in the city but it did and there were other areas that night as well,” said Martin. “It’s one of those nights that you’ll never forget.”
No one in the city died in the wake of the destruction, which was quite fortunate, given that the tornadoes touched down during rush hour, but at least 16 people were hospitalized around the city.
