Holiday travel, like many other things in 2020, will look quite different than in previous years.
AAA expects at least 34 million fewer Americans to travel for the holidays this year compared to 2019 due to ongoing concerns and restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The CDC is recommending Americans stay home instead of traveling in an effort to further mitigate the spread of the virus.
"During any other year, many Americans would be using up their vacation days by taking a year-end cruise or oversees trip, but this year we expect more people will be visiting with their families and friends virtually," said Bevi Powell, senior vice president, AAA East Central. "More Americans will spend time at home and in quarantine, which we believe will lead to further pent up demand for travel when the Pandemic comes to a close."
Despite the pandemic, AAA says nearly 85 million will still travel from December 23 through January 3, 2021.
Those who do travel for the holidays will likely do so by car. AAA believes 96% of travelers will drive over other methods of transportation.
If you do plan to travel, AAA suggests double-checking for potential restrictions all along your planned route, including hotels and vehicle rentals.
