ALCOSAN has officially broken ground on the $1 billion Ohio River Tunnel, marking the largest infrastructure project in Allegheny County's history.
With plans to be built 150 feet underground and spanning nearly 4.9 miles, the deep-storage tunnel is the first of three planned river tunnels designed to drastically reduce heavy-weather sewage overflows.
Awarded to the joint venture Steel City Tunnel Partners, the project is a cornerstone of ALCOSAN's Clean Water Plan and is scheduled to be completed by 2032.
