A new issue at the Allegheny County Jail has surfaced.

An audit shows the facility is short-staffed by more than 125 corrections officers.

The audit by Allegheny County Controller Corey O’Connor also found more than a third of the officers are working overtime and more than half of the jail’s health care jobs are unfilled.

The jail is dealing with similar hiring struggles seen in the private sector.

Tens of thousands of people dropped out of the labor force in the Pittsburgh region during the pandemic and have not returned.

The controller’s office recommends hiring incentives, and improving management and staff communications to reverse staffing shortages.
