Allegheny County now has an additional $1.2 million for emergency shelters for the homeless this winter.
County Executive Rich Fitzgerald made the announcement on Wednesday.
The money comes from the Pennsylvania Department of Economic and Community Development out of the CARES Act funds.
"The provision of shelter services for those experiencing homelessness in our community are an important support that becomes absolutely necessary during the winter months," said Fitzgerald.
"When you take into consideration the additional challenges due to COVID, it is quite a lift for the county and its partners. We are grateful to Governor Wolf, Secretary Davin and the state for this award and will put it to immediate use in the county."
The Department of Human Services will use the money to supplement current county shelter programs for those who are homeless.
