Belle Vernon Student Charged for Online Threat

A student a Belle Vernon is facing criminal charges after threats of violence were made online recently.

Rostraver Township Police, along with the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office say a juvenile student referenced a school shooting last week while playing video games with someone online, in Minnesota.

Out of an abundance of caution, the person in Minnesota informed local police of the threat, which was believed to be a specific threat against the Belle Vernon School District.

After learning of the threat, Rostraver Police executed a search warrant at the juvenile’s house and their electronic devices.

The student is being charged as a juvenile and faces charges of terroristic threats and simple assault.

“Rostraver Township Police would like to commend the online gamer for taking this threat seriously, showing initiative, and having the courage to reach out and contact our department,” said Rostraver Police Chief Schott Sokol. “We are truly thankful for the support of our district attorney’s office and the cooperation of our school district.”

“The prompt and proactive measures of the Rostraver Police Department and Belle Vernon Area School District to intercept this threat, credible or not, should be commended,” said Westmoreland Co. D.A. Nicole Ziccarelli. “I am thankful for the individual who reported this and that all students and staff are safe.”
