A Butler man was killed by police Tuesday morning after investigators say he stabbed an officer multiple times.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, a Butler City Police officer responded to the 300 block of West Jefferson St. around 7 a.m. for reports of a man behaving erratically and jumping in and out of oncoming traffic.
When the officer approached the man, a struggle began between them. Police say the man then stabbed the officer multiple times.
After he was injured, the officer shot the suspect, who later died.
The officer was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital in critical, but stable condition to undergo surgery. He was identified by investigators as a 27-year-old United States Marine Veteran who has been with Butler City Police for three years.
The deceased suspect was identified as 35-year-old John Ebberts of Butler City.
Pennsylvania State Police, the Butler County District Attorney's Office and the Butler County Coroner's Office are investigating.
