CDC says Norovirus increasing at a high percentage in the US

Another virus appears to be taking hold of the US.

Norovirus is a very contagious virus that most commonly causes diarrhea and vomiting, commonly known as the "stomach flu".

CDC data shows a steady increase in positive tests over the last three months, reaching a national positive test rate a few weeks ago at 17 percent, the highest for the last year.

UPMC's Dr. Donald Yealy says norovirus thrives on close contact, "It's because it's very easily transmitted and very rapidly, so it can, all of a sudden, take over a large segment of your household or cruise ship or school. We see this recurrent cycle all throughout the year."

Washing your hands is the key prevention method, but the CDC says hand sanitizer isn't as powerful against norovirus.

"There are no specific treatments right now. It's a virus so antibiotics are going to matter, the thing that may help…is talk to your doctor about medications that help control vomiting," explains Dr. Yealy.

Dehydration is the main concern due to the rapid loss of liquids in the body. Washing food and disinfecting surfaces can also help prevent contraction of the virus.

Allegheny County has seen normal levels as of now, but with cases on the upswing in the county you can never be too cautious.
