Chemical release from derailed train has low risk on Pittsburgh air quality, but be cautious

Eric Whiting

By now most have heard about the train that derailed in East Palestine, Ohio over the weekend.

The train caused a massive fire, causing NTSB to step in to help contain the situation.

They announced today that they were going to conduct a controlled chemical release and evacuated the at risk areas, including parts of western Pennsylvania.

But could the toxic air flow to Pittsburgh and its surrounding areas affecting air quality?

Brian Thompson from AccuWeather joined the Rick Dayton Show today and here's what he had to say on the matter.

"Heading into tomorrow we're going to see the wind picking up, it hasn't been much of a factor today. We'll see winds out of the south and southwest blowing at about as high as 12-25 mph's," Thompson explained.

Pittsburgh is also supposed to see a rain shower tomorrow, but Thompson says it won't be much or do much to aid the situation.

"Rain can help clear out air quality a little bit, doesn't have a big impact [in dissipating black smoke], bigger storm Wednesday to Wednesday night, if we're dealing with air quality issues that far down the road that could help."

Thompson goes on to tell that a temperature inversion could also benefit the situation. We could see stronger winds on Thursday though, so proceed with caution and monitor air quality this week.
