PITTSBURGH (100.1 FM and AM 1020 KDKA) Crowds of people are gathering in Downtown Pittsburgh at a place called "the wall" next to Fort Duquesne Boulevard.

As many as 30 to 40 people gather at "the wall" each day to sell, buy, or use drugs.

Many of the people involved with the trade are reported to be among the city's homeless population.

"We believe it to be an open air drug market," Lee Schmidt of Pittsburgh Public Safety said.

Mayor Ed Gainey and his administration have been made aware of the situation and is planning on taking action.

"The ones that are homeless, dealing with the mental health, dealing with the housing," Mayor Gainey said. "We don't want to arrest them.
The ones that are doing wrong and breaking the law, we definitely want them arrested and taken off the streets."

Police and the Gainey Administration plan on addressing the activated and are planning to take action but won't reveal exact details.

Allegheny County Controller Corey O'Connor tells the Big K Morning Show on NewsRadio KDKA that a more full-scale approach is needed.

"It's not just an easy flick of the switch," O'Connor said. "It is a full scale, putting people on the streets, making sure that everything is clean. As well as getting people help that need it."

Mayor Gainey and County Executive Rich Fitzgerald are expected to soon announce a plan for dealing with the homeless camps that have cropped up Downtown.
