D.A. Zappala claims Kennywood is not safe, threatens to block opening

The Allegheny County District Attorney has serious concerns with Kennywood Park. News Radio KDKA's.

D.A. Stephen Zappala said at a news conference in McCandless Friday morning that Kennywood is not safe, and that he intends to go to court to block the amusement park's opening day next month unless the security measures that his office recommended are adopted.

In particular, Zappala has issues with the perimeter of the park, and doesn't feel Kennywood has done enough to address the security in that aspect.

Back in September, a gun was able to pass through security measures, possibly thrown over a fence, and used in a shooting inside the park that left three people injured during the park's annual Phantom Fall Fest.

Kennywood in a statement said that the safety and security of its guests and team members is its top priority and they look forward to opening on opening day, April 22, which would be the start of its 125th season.

Kennywood showed media their updated security procedures after the shooting occurred last year.

They announced number of police personnel inside the park will be doubled.

Other increases to safety: all guest 17 or younger must be accompanied by an adult; additional lighting and security will be along the parks perimeter to prevent people from avoiding security.

Other updates and changes to the security procedures include a new bag policy and an alteration to the mask policy.
