PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) — The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh announced on Saturday that they will be postponing the start of the elementary school basketball season until January 2021.
The Diocese is making the sports schedule changes in attempts to remain vigilant in the midst of a third COVID-19 peak.
Additionally, the Diocese is also cancelling Catholic Youth Organization athletic programs.
Adults leagues will not be allowed to use Catholic facilities, either.
That goes for basketball or volleyball events.
While in-house practices are still allowed, they will be prohibited during Thanksgiving and Christmas, however.
No interscholastic games of any kind are allowed until January.
"Our primary goal with our schools is 5 day-a-week in-person instruction for our students. Everything else is secondary. We understand and value the positive behavior and physical development that happens through athletic programs, but given the pandemic, we need to make hard decisions in the interest of doing everything we can to keep our school families healthy and safe," said Michelle Peduto, Director of Catholic Schools.
