Extracurricular school activities have COVID outbreak potential: doctor

Summer camps across the country are being hit with COVID outbreaks, according to a story in Tuesday's Trib.

Are schools next? Dr. Amesh Adalja, Infectious Disease Specialist and Critical Care Specialist, tells Lynne Hayes-Freeland on NewsRadio KDKA that "I think it's something that parents should realize is going to be a possibility."

But he stresses that's no reason to keep kids home from school.

"When you're in school, it's not the actual sitting in the classroom where cases occur. It's the extracurricular activities - sports, the dances, all of that. That's where I think we have to be much more careful.

Dr. Adalja says the best way prevent these outbreaks is to have as many people vaccinated as possible.
