The Department of Justice has sued Norfolk Southern over the East Palestine train derailment.
According to a civil suit filed Thursday, the DOJ wants to make Norfolk Southern pay the full cost of environmental cleanup.
It's seeking injunctive relief, cost recovery and civil penalties.
The government places blame on Norfolk Southern for the crash and its environmental impacts like the pollutants and harmful substances discharged into the nearby air and water.
It says those impacts were a violation of the Clean Water Act.
The DOJ also accuses the company of creating performance metrics too focused on increasing revenue, sacrificing funds for repairs and maintenance.
Norfolk Southern released the following statement:
Our job right now is to make progress every day cleaning up the site, assisting residents whose lives were impacted by the derailment, and investing in the future of East Palestine and the surrounding areas. We are working with urgency, at the direction of the U.S. EPA, and making daily progress. That remains our focus and we'll keep working until we make it right.
