When Levine was confirmed by the Senate to become the assistant secretary of health in October of 2021, she became the highest ranking openly transgender official.

Dr. Levine also became the first openly transgender four-star officer across the uniformed services.

"We need to be welcoming and celebratory for women of all aspects, of all sizes and shapes," Dr. Levine said. "And we have to work towards that compassion for all women and not put such an emphasis on thinness and appearance.”

Dr. Levine is part of a distinguished list of women published by USA Today, including Melinda French Gates, Simone Biles, and Vice President Kamala Harris.
