Driverless ride-hailing company Waymo to begin testing in Pittsburgh

A fully autonomous ride service has announced it's coming to Pittsburgh.

Waymo says next week the company’s driverless vehicles will be driving in “Pittsburgh’s downtown core”.

The vehicles, part of the 5th and 6th generation will be testing over the upcoming months “as we work our way toward public launch in the future.”

Waymo already has a footprint in the Pittsburgh area with connections to Carnegie Mellon University and members of the Waymo team calling the area home.

“With Waymo’s support, we can grow our programs and create more opportunities for friendship, jobs, and leadership development—helping build a more inclusive community for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” said Samantha Civitate, Best Buddies State Director for Pennsylvania. “Accessible transportation remains a vital piece of fostering independence and inclusion.”

The driverless ride-hailing service is currently used in places like Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin and Atlanta.
