The Allegheny County District Attorney announced a new charge against the suspect in the case of the deadly stabbing of a UPMC doctor.
District Attorney Stephen Zappala says investigators have determined Elijah Hemingway was also implicated in a separate sexual assault.
He says the new charge is based on evidence uncovered during the investigation into the attack.
"When... or, they were processing him, then, there was communications from a police department that they liked this guy on something, or that he had... he had been implicated in a very serious crime," said Zappala.
Hemingway is already charged in the death of Dr. Idris Evans and the stabbing of Evans’ wife.
He was also out on non-monetary bond in a separate burglary case when the attack happened. Zappala says he does not know when the new sexual assault charge will be formally filed.
For his part, Steven Zappala says his office was not there when Hemingway was given a non-monetary bond.
"We don't attend those unless we're asked to attend those by the police or by, you know, concerned citizens, victims who were, you know, victims who were being intimidated, for instance, things like that,” said Zappala. “Had we known about this and known about his rap sheet, we probably would have taken an appeal with Judge Borkowski. That's water under the bridge, though."
Zappala did say, however, that a new sexual assault charge that has just been uncovered is expected to be filed against Hemingway as well.
He's due in court next Thursday for his preliminary hearing on the burglary charges.
