With dangerously cold temperatures coming into the region next week, the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued an “extreme cold watch”.
The watch begins Sunday night and runs through Tuesday morning.
The NWS says temperatures will be 30 degrees below normal with “dangerous” wind chills as low at 25 degrees below zero.
Wind chills as low as 30 degrees below zero could be possible at higher elevations.
The coldest period is expected Monday through early Wednesday.
The highs early in the week will struggle to get above 10. Lows will hover around 0 with a low of -6 on Tuesday.
With real feels as low as -25 possible, frostbite is possible within 15 minutes.
If you have to be outside, make sure you dress in layers, wear gloves and a hat.
School delays and cancellations are also possible.
Pet owners, limit their time outside and check on more vulnerable members of the community.
Also, extreme cold can cause water pipes to freeze and rupture. Keep a small stream, even a trickle of water running to prevent freezing.
Opening cabinets with pipes also helps keep them from freezing.
It will get warning by Thursday with temperatures in the upper 20s.
