UPDATE: the PA Department of State provided the following statement to KDKA Radio, saying the mistake was human error.
The PA Department of State is aware that human error in Fayette County resulted in approximately 300 approved mail ballots not being mailed to voters by the county elections office. Fayette County officials brought it to the Department’s attention shortly after learning of the issue, and we took immediate action to assist the county in addressing it. This was not an issue caused by the SURE system.
We are working closely with Fayette County officials on this isolated issue to ensure that impacted voters are able to make their voices heard by casting mail ballots at the county elections office – or by voting at the polls on Election Day. Our goal, as always, is to ensure that every eligible voter is able to make their voice heard and that every eligible ballot is counted. We will run another free, fair, safe, and secure election on Tuesday. About 300 voters in Fayette County who requested a mail in ballot may not have received one.
That's according to the Fayette County Election Bureau, which is reaching out those voters to let them know of the problem that appears to be due to mail ballot label files generated by the state's voter registration system.
Officials say anyone who didn't receive a ballot can request one Friday and Monday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or on Election Day itself from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Those who can't visit the office in person due to disability or another limitation should contact the Fayette County Election Bureau to make other arrangements.
“We want every eligible voter to vote next Tuesday,” said the county Election Director Marybeth Kuznik. “The Election Bureau is doing everything we can to get the message out that we will replace the ballot of any voter who requested one and did not receive it.”
