The FBI is warning about a new scam strangely targeting the area lately.
Scammers in Mexico are scouring social media to find posts from people who are currently traveling there. The scammers are calling the traveler's family members, telling them their loved one has been kidnapped, then demanding money.
FBI supervisory special agent Timothy Wolford says in just one week, 450 of these calls were made to numbers with a 7-2-4 area code.
"They were able to identify several individuals from this area who were traveling in the southwest region. And because of that, they started flooding this area with phone calls," Wolford said.
He said the first thing you should do if you get one of these calls is to try to contact the family member who is traveling.
FBI Pittsburgh also notes to never give out financial information to someone over the phone that is unknown to you. Most of the time, the scammers are convincing and their actions are criminal.
