Pennsylvania lawmakers are moving to put new limits on cameras that read license plates.
So-called flock cameras have sparked privacy debates, and House lawmakers have passed and sent to the Senate a bill to restrict how government agencies use Automated License Plate Readers.
“We do need guardrails in place for this technology,” said Rep. Jennifer O’Mara, a Democrat out of the Philadelphia area, who also said she is a supporter of the technology.
“I have heard from police officers in my district and from chiefs across the commonwealth with concrete examples of how the use of ALPRs have helped them solve murder cases and rape cases and find missing people,” said O’Mara.
Under the bill, data not connected to an investigation or enforcement matter would be deleted within 72 hours.
