Social media was buzzing last weekend about the shocking behavior of some students at a high school basketball game.
A Burgettstown player about to score his 1000th point, who recently lost his father to cancer, was the target of a chant from the Fort Cherry student section, asking him: "Where's your dad?"
The senior forward was so upset he left the game.
The school district quickly went into damage control mode. In a statement, the superintendent offered Burgettstown High School an apology and said disrespecting others at sporting events would not be tolerated.
Sadly, this is no isolated incident. High school athletes have been reprimanded repeatedly for racist taunts.
Where do children get the idea this behavior is OK? The parents.
It is routine in our area to hear of officials and coaches being verbally abused. In one case, a referee was assaulted. The parents of athletes have brawled during a game.
What happened at Fort Cherry is a symptom of an increasingly uncivil culture and the adults are to blame.
We strongly believe it's time parents start acting like parents and be the role models they are supposed to be.
