A new public safety effort is likely coming to downtown Pittsburgh.
Mayor Ed Gainey told Marty Griffin the plan will include a new public safety center downtown, a bigger police presence during commuting hours and Group Violence Intervention specialists to work with kids.
But Gainey said their plan also includes working on the perception that downtown is a dangerous place.
“I’m proud to say that whether it was Juneteenth, the Pride Festival, the Fourth of July, the Black Music Festival, Picklesburgh or the Arts Festival, those major events that brought tens of thousands of people downtown, we had no violence.”
Gainey released the Plan for Peace earlier this month, highlighting public safety priorities in his administration
Though Gainey didn't provide full details with Marty Griffin Wednesday morning, he did say it will allow officers to be more active in the downtown business district.
Gainey said it's one of several strategies to provide more public safety support downtown in the near future.
