Hikers take note. The Kennywood section of the Great Allegheny Passage is now closed indefinitely.
The Regional Trail Corporation says the decision to close the stretch between the Whitaker flyover and the Port Perry flyover in West Mifflin is because of two large, unstable rock hazards along the hillside.
RTC says it was a difficult decision to close the stretch of the trail during their peak season but, says their primary concern is safety.
There will be shuttle service offered from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day, at a fee of $20 per person. The one-way shuttle takes between 16-20 minutes depending on traffic.
You can also consider using Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus routes, 59 or 61C.
"Extending a trail closure indefinitely during peak season is a difficult decision, and we fully recognize the inconvenience it causes to cyclists, hikers, and local trail-town businesses," said Mark Place, RTC Board President. "However, as trail stewards, our primary responsibility is user safety. Even if the trail surface appears clear, the potential risk of overhead rockfall requires us to rely on certified engineering assessments before moving forward. We will not compromise public safety."
The Great Allegheny Passage is a 150-mile trail from Cumberland, Maryland to Downtown Pittsburgh.
