Gas prices have been rising for the last year and experts believe Russia's invasion could push prices even higher.
Gas stations began paying higher prices for fuel in the hours after Russia invaded Ukraine. Gas Buddy's Patrick De Haan says it may take some time to hit consumers.
"The national average could rise .5-to-.15 cents per gallon in the next 1-to-2 weeks. Of course, as this situation continues to escalate, the primary risk of this situation is Russia's oil flow," said De Haan.
Russia is the second-leading oil producer in the world, and experts fear leaders there could retaliate against sanctions by withholding it.
Oil prices surged above $100 a barrel Thursday.
"The primary impact is on Americans' wallets. They will be paying more at the pump, evenly-distributed across much of the country. California's average gas price will likely eclipse $5 a gallon in the next few weeks. The national average has the potential to rise over $4 a gallon."
President Joe Biden says he's coordinating with other countries to keep gas prices down and release supplies from strategic petroleum reserves.
According to Gas Buddy, the average price in the Pittsburgh area this week is $3.66 a gallon, nearly 16 cents per gallon higher than a month ago.
