The Pirates have gotten the okay to build a new entertainment plaza next to PNC Park on the North Shore.

City Planning Commission members on Tuesday gave approval to a proposal to install a giant video screen at the west end of the plaza.

On baseball game days, it will show game highlights.

At other times, it could be used to show movies.

To ease concerns about whether the screen could be seen by passing motorists on Interstate 279, the Pirates will plant 30-foot-high white pine trees in the parking lot across from the plaza to obstruct views from the roadway.

Developer Herky Pollock, who is involved in the project, said on a Facebook post, “This is a huge development in our effort to bring our multi-faceted experiential entertainment concept to North Shore!”
