Gus & YiaYia’s ice ball and treat stand will have it’s 2025 grand opening on Thursday.

Mike Spanos now runs the cart located at Allegheny Commons Park on the North Side after owner Gus Kalaris passed away last summer at the age of 92.

Spanos says that the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy will be planting a tree across the street from the stand in honor of Gus, who died last June at the age of 92.

They’ll be open from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the high will be in the mid-60s!

Weather permitting, the cart will be open through Monday, 11:30 to 6.

Gus took over the business in 1951 from his dad, who started it in 1934.

Gus’ wife or “YiaYia”, Stella, died in 2016.

YiaYia is Greek for grandmother and Gus’ mother, Pauline, was the original before Stella

The orange cart is located in the park on West Ohio Street.
