Herd immunity, chances of third booster shot explained

PITTSBURGH (100.1 FM and AM 1020 KDKA) - As vaccinations continue to increase, some wonder about herd immunity.

"Herd immunity is essentially when the virus stops spreading through the community effectively," said Dr. David Rottinghaus, Chief Medical Officer at the Butler Health System, during the KDKA Radio Morning Show.

Rottinghaus does not know what percentage of the population needs to be naturally infected or vaccinated in order for herd immunity to be met.

"If people are going to have waning of their immune response, and say in another year, or even six months, be susceptible to getting the virus again, then that may require boosters," Rottinghaus said.
