First reported by KDKA Radio in April, the popular summer street festival, Jam on Walnut is not taking place this year.
Officials tell KDKA Radio that the organizer of Jam on Walnut has decided not to host the event this year.
The annual event is not happening due to a “lack of capacity of the previous non-profit organization that put this event on and . . . growing concerns around community safety, cleanliness, and underage drinking,” a post on Think Shadyside’s Facebook page reads.
Jam on Walnut has been a free, monthly series of concerts held in Shadyside's prime business district for more than 20 years, but last year, residents and businesses raised concerns about a sudden increase in underage drinking, including cases of teenagers passing out in some yards, public urination, and leaving behind broken and empty beer bottles.
Taking Jam on Walnut’s place is a new outdoor Summer Music Series that will be held on one Saturday a month between June and September, from 3 to 6 p.m. on Walnut Street.
The family-friendly event kicks off June 13.
