With the lingering government shutdown bringing SNAP food assistant benefits to an end, thousands of people in the Pittsburgh area are nervous about where their next meal will come from.
Nearly 13 percent of residents in Allegheny County rely on SNAP. In Greene and Fayette Counties, that number is above 20 percent.
In a recent report, it was revealed that 1 in 4 active military families rely on programs like SNAP and that was BEFORE the shutdown.
To make sure no one goes hungry, organizations like the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank and companies like Giant Eagle are stepping up.
The food bank says they’ve seen a 30 percent increase in need. In an effort to help, Giant Eagle has announced a $1 million donation to food banks around the area.
Until the government gets up and running again, it’s up to food banks, non-profits and the kindness of everyone to make sure we all have something to eat...
Any donation, no matter how small, makes a difference. The Food Bank says $1 is enough to provide 3 meals.
It’s up to all of us to make sure no one goes hungry.
You can donate HERE or when you check out at your local Giant Eagle.
