KDKA Radio Editorial: Oppose the massive gas tax replacement proposal for Pennsylvania

Governor Tom Wolf appointed 42 people to a commission in March, assigning them the task of finding new sources of transportation revenue.

Gas tax income has leveled off and the state has an eight-billion-dollar annual gap to fill in the Department of Transportation budget.

The panel is proposing a huge tax increase, replacing the gasoline tax with a miles driven tax that would cost a commuter who drives 50 miles a day $750 a year.

That’s four times higher than the gas tax.  There are smaller proposals for package delivery fees and increased vehicle rental and registration fees among other things.

Taken together, it is too much to ask. A separate plan for tolls on a Pittsburgh area bridge could cost a daily driver another 500 to $1000 annually.

Now’s the time to call your state lawmakers to oppose a massive tax increase.
