PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 100.1 FM and AM 1020 KDKA) – Pittsburgh city council members are asking state officials for more authority to set local speed limits, the TribLive reports.
Currently, they are not allowed to do so under Pennsylvania law.
Speed limits in the commonwealth are currently set by 85% of the traffic that uses roads to safety navigate them. For lower limits to bet set, there needs to be a history of bad crashes or other specific incidents.
The council wants the state to change how this system is set because constituents want the speed limit lowered on certain streets.
While the city uses speed bumps, crosswalks, bike line guides, and paintings to slow cars, a lower speed limit would help the best.
The measure for local governments to set the speed limit standard will be sent to state officials, including Pittsburgh's legislative delegation.
