Winter weather has kept local warming shelters busy over the last week.
Pittsburgh Mercy's warming center in the Smithfield United Church of Christ was at capacity Monday evening as bitter temperatures hit the area.
Dr. Jim Withers, founder of their Operation Safety Net program, says their shelter can only take so many people currently between typical building capacity and COVID measures. However, they've worked to increase capacity in other ways.
"We have social services people there to work with them on various issues. We have medical care there every Sunday through Thursday night.
With the addition of all the COVID issues, we have screening, testing and vaccinations."
Their shelter also offers COVID testing and vaccines, and will help someone get into quarantine if need be. He said they also work with the county to help people quarantine if needed.
