Monday's fatal shooting in McKeesport of Officer Sean Sluganski is putting the spotlight on veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
Sluganski was reportedly shot by Johnathan Jermia Morris, who was, according to a 911 call, suffering from PTSD and was being aggressive toward his mother.
Statistics show 11 to 20 percent of veterans suffer from PTSD.
On the Big K Morning Show, State Senator Josh Kail of Beaver County talked about the lack of mental health support for vets.
“It’s certainly not readily available as you’d think it might be,” said Kail. “It’s there but it takes diving into, it’s like dealing with layers and layers of bureaucracy, there’s certain forms and boxes and things you gotta check out.”
Kail is calling for changes to the system to make treatment for mental health more accessible to veterans.
