Following reports of confirmed cases of measles last week at UPMC Children's Hospital, contact tracing is ongoing among the hundreds of people who visited the facility.
“We have to contact people who came in contact with someone else, either with the virus, from symptoms or exposure,” Dr. Don Yealy tells KDKA Radio’s Marty Griffin.
UPMC's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Don Yealy, confirmed Children's Hospital has been getting in touch with hundreds of visitors and patients who were in specific rooms or went to certain floors.
“Because if you are in those areas, the possibility of transmission is high,” added Yealy.
Dr. Yealy told KDKA's Marty Griffin most of the patients testing positive for measles are from counties east of Pittsburgh and the overwhelming majority are unvaccinated.
He also confirmed the Amish are "represented to a high degree" in all measles cases in the state.
The latest numbers from the PA Department of Health show a total of 540 cases of measles now recorded in the commonwealth with 119 new cases in the past seven days.
