The Flight 93 Memorial is holding its annual 9/11 commemoration today.

The day began with the reading of the names of the passengers and crew on board Flight 93.

It's believed hijackers were headed for the US Capitol, when those on board fought back, causing the plane to crash near Shanksville.

There is also a wreath laying ceremony.

Governor Shapiro tells the Big K Morning show, it's about honoring those on board, as well as those who responded without hesitation 22 years ago.

“You just have to celebrate not just for what they did on 9/11 but every day, as I do and there’s also just folks in this rural town who just ran out into this meadow and tried to help,” said Shapiro.

“We must never forget,” added Shapiro. “I think we all have a responsibility to educate the next generation about what happened.”

President Joe Biden did not travel to Shanksville, instead electing to commemorate the attacks at an Alaska military base.

Commemorations also took place at the site of the former World Trade Center and the Pentagon, where the other attacks took place.
