State lawmakers in Harrisburg are considering legislation that would keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons.

State Representative John Hershey of the 82nd Legislative District is sponsoring a bill that would do so by closing a legal loophole.

Here's how he explained it on the NewsRadio KDKA morning show:

"They are prohibited from owning a firearm under federal law, but they can still purchase a firearm under state law", he says. "And so this would prohibit people who are already federally prohibited from owning a firearm under federal law from doing so under state law. And so it just gives the D.A.'s an extra tool in their toolbox to be able to press those charges".

The bill was passed by the House Judiciary Committee this week.
