During your last visit to the Pittsburgh Zoo, did you notice something unique about one of the penguins?

Floppy, a one-year-old gentoo penguin, is recovering after an amputation of his left wing late in 2021. According to the Pittsburgh Zoo, Floppy is the only-known penguin with an amputated wing at a zoo or aquarium in the United States.

In August of 2021, aquarists noticed swelling near one of Floppy’s shoulders. After tests were done, it was found out that Floppy needed surgery to repair the one wing, due to a broken wing bone.

Several weeks past and the wound was not healing like it was supposed to.

Fast-forward to September, Floppy had the wing amputated. It took a few months, but aquarists at the Pittsburgh Zoo said Floppy was brought back to the penguin colony once re-learning how to swim, dive, float and navigating the habitat was complete.

Floppy continues to make a full recovery every day.
