KDKA Radio Editorial: Open Primaries

Pennsylvania’s voter turnout has been steadily improving from a low of 63% in 2000 to over 76% in 2020.

That number could be even higher if state lawmakers will vote in favor of legislation for open primaries.

An argument for making the change is: closed primaries can produce ideologically extreme nominees.

Backers of open primaries say independents can be a force in moderating races. Most candidates would try to appeal to at least some voters outside their party base.

Voters with no party registration number more than 1.3 million and their numbers are growing.
