A major change will impact parking for all the big North Shore events.

A new era is arriving on the North Shore starting with the Pirates home opener in April as all parking lots and garages will go completely cashless for special events.

Merrill Stabile, President of Alco Parking tells KDKA Radio cash is problematic for the business.

“The cost of protecting it, the cost of transferring it, the cost of counting it, depositing it,” said Stabile.

30 percent of special event parkers still use cash, which is a little higher than Stabile had hoped.

“We had hoped, by the natural trend, it would be less than that but it hasn’t so we’re finally just clamping down,” said Stabile.

Stabile says he's following the lead of the Pirates, Steelers, and the Penguins.

PNC Park, Acrisure Stadium and PPG Paints Arena are all cashless locations.

Cashless parking begins on April 5.
