His fellow police officers called him Slug... known for his sense of humor and friendship.

Several people spoke at the service at St. Albert the Great, Blessed Trinity Parish in Baldwin.

His partner on the day of the shooting was Officer Chuck Thomas, who survived a gunshot wound himself.

“I couldn’t have had a better partner,” said Thomas, holding back tears. “He’ll forever be my hero.”

And his sister Sheila recalled how her brother always wanted to serve. “You were my hero, long before you were a cop,” said Sluganski’s sister.

Sluganski leaves behind a one-year-old daughter and a fiancée.

“I feel like the luckiest person to have been loved by him for as long as I was and even though it was a short time, to witness him be the most amazing dad,” said his fiancée.

The community paid tribute to Sluganski with signs on buses, businesses and along sidewalks that said “RIP” and “We love you Slug”.

Sluganski’s body was escorted by hundreds of law enforcement officers through down then to Jefferson Memorial Cemetery where family held a private committal.
