Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto is throwing the City's support behind a national, multi-city push to get the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to regulate what are called "ghost guns."
Ghost guns are unfinished frames and receivers that can be made into fully functioning guns with some simple modifications. They're not regulated the same way firearms are regulated since they're not assembled when they're sold. They're not required to have serial numbers and background checks are not required to purchase them.
“The cities lending their support for this litigation are not asking for anything unreasonable. Firearms regulations should be applied to all guns, including ghost guns,” said Peduto. “It’s unfair to those who comply with regulations- regulations that exist to protect the safety of our communities. We just ask that the ATF apply these rules to all gun sales.”
The other cities that are supporting the push include Columbus, Ohio; Dayton, Ohio; Durham, North Carolina; Hartford, Connecticut; Los Angeles, California; New York, New York; Paterson, New Jersey; Providence, Rhode Island; Rochester, New York; and Seattle, Washington.
