Panic erupted at the University of Pittsburgh’s Hillman Library on Monday night after Pittsburgh Police received a call of an active shooter inside the building.
While that call was determined to be unfounded, there was confusion on the campus after an officer opened fire into a glass door in a construction area so officers could get inside the building.
The gunfire sent people running after they heard the shots.
The building was cleared before midnight and there was no evidence of an active shooter. No one was hurt.
While there was no active shooter, getting information to students was delayed due to an issue with the University’s Emergency Notification System.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Pitt said the message was sent out, “was both delayed and flawed while officers were dispatched to a similar call in Mervis Hall.”
Pitt says they are reviewing their system.
The hoax comes a little over a week after several local high schools received reports of an active shooter, including Central Catholic and Oakland Catholic near the Pitt campus.
All of those calls were false as well.
Pitt has opened up a “student support space” where Pitt’s Campus Crisis Support team will be available for anyone who needs support from 12 to 2 p.m. in the O’Hara Student Center.
