On Thursday, while in Scotland for a United Nations climate summit, Mayor Peduto made the sister city status official with an in-person ceremony.

The official in-person finalization comes a year after a virtual ceremony was held.

“The long-established Scottish connection to Pittsburgh has been strengthened in recent years as we’ve shared the challenges of industrial heritage, built a renewed strength through a shared resilience journey and now seek to collaborate further through a sister cities arrangement,” Mayor Peduto said.

A “Sister City” is a form of legal or social agreement between two politically and geographically distinct localities.

When cities agree to be “sisters” they are doing so with the purpose of promoting cultural and commercial ties.

Glasgow, Scotland is now Pittsburgh’s 19th sister city; They join other international cities like Sheffield, England and Croatia’s capital Zagreb.
