Pittsburgh City Council is considering changing the COVID-19 paid sick leave requirement for some Pittsburgh businesses.

Currently, Pittsburgh businesses with over 50 employees are required to provide paid sick leave to workers who contract COVID-19 or are forced to quarantine.

That law is set to expire on August 3 along with the City's emergency declaration.

Councilman Bobby Wilson is now proposing extending that requirement until 90 percent of eligible Pennsylvanians are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

"I hope to pass this because the more that we can provide a good workplace for workers, the better," Wilson told Lynne Hayes-Freeland on News Radio KDKA.

Wilson believes the extended sick leave will be critical as kids return to school in the fall.

"We still have children that are under the age of 12 that can't be vaccinated," he said. "As schools go back, we shouldn't have to choose whether or not we provide child care to our child if they become sick because of COVID."

Wilson says he hasn't heard of any opposition to the plan on City Council.

Council is expected to cast a final vote on the revision Tuesday.
