The Republican Committee of Pittsburgh thinks the selection of a new police chief is too important, and Council should wait until after the election before confirming anyone to the post.
Committee Chair Todd McCollum says the GOP has concerns about Interim Chief Chris Ragland, who was nominated for the position full-time on Friday, saying they've heard he lacks support among the rank and file.
Plus, there was an agreement to allow former Chief Larry Scirotto to referee basketball games, but City Council didn't know about it.
And McCollum says there's that matter of a Democratic primary.
“We don’t even know if Mayor Gainey is going to come out of his primary against his opponent,” said McCollum. “We think it would be hasty to pick a police chief at this point.”
As for if a third candidate would join the Two Republicans already in the race---Tony Moreno and Thomas West--- McCollum said as of now, probably not.
