A new semester begins today in Pittsburgh Public Schools and the district is attempting to start on a positive note.

Pittsburgh Public Schools continues to recover from a difficult January, which saw a student shot and killed outside Oliver Citywide Academy, a fight at Brashear that sent one student to the hospital and another fight between students at Carrick that injured two employees.

As a new semester begins Wednesday, the district says they're launching a new initiative called Fresh Start for the Head and Heart.

It will promote positive messaging and school culture, and give schools the room to provide more support to students.

Oliver Citywide Academy students also return to in-person learning for the first time since the death of their classmate.

The district says teachers and counselors contacted most of the school's parents to get their input on safety.
