The September number is also down 13,600 from August, based on data from the state’s Center for Workforce Information and Analysis.

The labor force has been shrinking since before the pandemic, down by 51,000 from September 2019.

At the same time, jobs increased by 3,400 as colleges, universities and school districts reopened.

Economists say the drop in the labor force may be the result of early retirements, workers wanting to protect their health or one parent staying home due to limited child care options.
