Pittsburgh Zoo looking into opening a stand-alone aquarium on North Shore

The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium is looking into the possibility of opening an Aquarium on the North Shore.

In a release, the Zoo says the project, called the Pennsylvania Aquarium, is currently in the “conceptual and exploratory phase.”

That means the Zoo is looking into the feasibility and impact an aquarium would have on the North Shore.

A location has not been decided and there are no plans for construction at this time.

“Pennsylvania is the most populous state without a stand-alone aquarium,” says Pittsburgh Zoo President & CEO Dr. Jeremy Goodman. “The Pennsylvania Aquarium would expand the Zoo’s physical and conservation footprint, connecting the city and state to aquatic animals from around the planet as well as those that are native to the Commonwealth, celebrating our life-sustaining relationship with water and aquatic life in ways as we can present only in Pittsburgh.”

The “large-scale, immersive, stand-alone destination” would not duplicate that is already at the aquarium at the Zoo but would be brand new.
