The annexation of Wilkinsburg into the City of Pittsburgh is on hold for now.

Pittsburgh City Council plans to vote against the move next week, but has agreed to begin a longer-term information gathering process.

Over the next year, council will hear from experts and members of the public before another vote in 2023. Councilman Ricky Burgess has long advocated for a more thorough process.

"We must thoroughly investigate the consequences with the school board, the water authorities, also considering anti-gentrification and anti-displacement measures."

A number of council members, including Burgess, have already indicated they plan to vote for the annexation next year, barring any major issues.

If it's approved by council, it will go to the voters in Wilkinsburg.

The Wilkinsburg Community Development Corporation is leading the annexation effort on behalf of the citizens and local business owners. Over 1,000 Wilkinsburg residents signed a petition asking to be annexed to Pittsburgh.
